Plant Sources Of Omega 3

The fatty acids are polyunsaturated and are commonly found in fish tissues, flax seeds, walnuts, canola oil and hemp seeds. There are certain sources which even contain certain substances which counterfeit the advantages of Omega3. Grass-fed or finished livestock contains more of this fatty acid when compared to grains. For westerners food rich in omega 3 is a must. The main reason due to which many people in United States suffer from various ailments is the vast discrepancies in the ratio of omega 3 to omega 6.

An ideal ratio should be 1:1, but the ratio which is commonly found in many people is that of 20:1 that is 20 parts of Omega 6 and three parts of Omega 3. This leads to many ailments, such as cardiovascular ailments, depression, skin problems arthritis and allergies. Omega 3 is even beneficial for the healthy development of the brain. It helps in controlling the level of cholesterolin our body which causes many ailments. It even improves the immune system of our body. This fatty acid cannot be manufactured in the human body so its intake has to be supplemented either by fish oil or certain plant oils.

Fish is the best source of Omega 3 but due to the pollution which has affected the oceans, the skin of the fishes has become toxic in nature. As a result the essence of Omega 3 is lost. Fishes reared artificially are not a good source of omega 3 as they are not fed on the regular and healthy diet. Meat is also a major source of Omega 3.

The omega 3 in the fish is in the form of DHA that is Docosahexaenoic acid and EPA that is Eicosapentaenoic acid, whereas when Omega 3 is consumed through plant sources it is in the form of ALA that is Alpha-linolenic acid. It is unfavorable to consume plant sources to intake Omega 3 as ALA has to breakdown into DHA and EPA as ALA is not accepted by our body. But people who are vegetarian prefer only vegetarian sources of this fatty acid. People who don't have sound health find it really hard to convert the ALA into DHA and EPA.

Major plant sources of omega 3 are green leafy vegetables which are dark green in color namely broccoli, Canola oil, spinach, perilla, walnuts, pumpkin seeds, tahini and flaxseed oil. A research shows that 8.0 gram of ALA is provided by 14 gram of Flaxseed oil. On the other hand only 1.3 gram of omega 3 is provided by the intake of same quantity walnuts. Flaxseed oil has the ability to provide wholesome diet to the body if it is supplemented to a nutritious diet consisting of whole grain seeds, vegetables, beans and fruits. Other plant sources of omega 3 are seed grape oil, tofu, wheat and Acai Palm Fruit though which are not very rich but has certain ratio of the fatty acid which is necessary for the healthy development of the body.
