Cave Exploration in Dominican Republic

The Dominican Republic prides itself for having the most extensive cave system in the entire Caribbean. Most of these caves even contain thousands of years old artworks done by ancient people who resided in the country during the prehistoric period. The government has done extensive efforts in preserving all these natural and manmade treasures. This is the main reason the country is frequented by visitors who are so eager and keen to go on cave exploration tours that are available all over the country.

One of the best places to start your cave exploration activity would be in the city park called Mirador del Este. It is dotted with limestone sinkholes and caves, the most popular of which is the Los Tres Ojos. This massive cave is riddled with stalactites and stalagmites. There's even a long staircase on the cave's side part and some lagoons of different depths. While some people are contented looking at the lagoons, adventurists take their vacation a notch higher by diving into these.

Just outside the Santo Domingo, you will find the caves of El Pomier. There are around 54 caves that are sprawled all over the area. Most of these contain pictographs and petroglyphs that date back to thousands of years ago. These ancient artifacts are works by the Taina Indians who lived in the country more than a thousand of years ago. These caves are now stringently protected by the government in an effort to preserve one of the greatest historical treasures of the country.
