Ala Moana Beach Park

Considered the "largest urban beach park in Honolulu," Ala Moana Beach Park is a free 100-acre beach park with a spacious half-mile golden sand beach. If you are looking for surf without the crowd that typifies nearby Waikiki Beach, Ala Moana Beach Park is your best option. Plus, you can also view Diamond Head from here.

Ala Moana may be a quieter and calmer place to relax, but its surf condition fares no less than that of Waikiki Beach. Protected by an outer reef, the water in Ala Moana Beach is always calm. It is considered safe for children, and ideal for swimming, body boarding, boogie boarding, and surfing.

However, water visibility is poor so children should always be watched and made sure they don't stray from the shore. Also, waters in the beach channel can be deceptive. If you are a weak swimmer or a beginner, do not swim near the reef area; the water may look calm on the surface but have strong undercurrents. Watch out also for swift tidal changes and sharp, jagged corals near the reef area. On the other hand, swimming near the boat channels are strongly advised against.

Services and amenities: lifeguards, picnic areas, phones, restrooms, shower rooms, sand and reef beach, barbecue grills, ample free parking space, concession stand, tennis courts, volleyball courts.

5 Unique Things:

The beach is man-made! In the 1950s, the beach when the dredged earth of the Dillingham Dredge Company was dumped at the park. Boat channels lie on both sides of the beach A boat channel and the 25-foot swimming channel were also once dredged out of the reef. Ala Moana Beach Park is just across the street from Ala Moana Center, the largest open air shopping center in the world. Pride Festival and Memorial Day Lantern Festival are celebrated by locals here.
