Cave Man Home Decor

Human beings have a long and storied past. As a species we have survived wars, natural disasters, famine, disease, wild animals, and every imaginable ill that could plague us. Today, in our modern plastic molded lives, we are isolated to some extent from the savagery of the world. We have created a buffer between us and nature. However there is still an undeniable spirit of the primitive that lurks within us, constantly seeking to escape into the actual world.

cave

One way to indulge this primal spirit is in the way you decorate your environment. Not everything in your home has to be stainless steal perfect. In fact, by inviting certain "imperfections" into your home, you can give the environment a powerful sense of individuality and personality, which will be missing from the machine manufactured spaces which your friends inhabit.

Cave

The first thing you should do is look into natural materials. The more you surround yourself with nature, the more you will begin to feel the heart song of the earth itself. Look for items manufactured from natural stone, wicker, and hardwood.

Another way to surround your home with nature is to place plants within the environment. This not only connects you with the living world, but it can inject a much needed sense of energy and vitality into a space, causing it to almost breathe with excitement.

Searching out rustic furnishings is another way to placate your primitive spirit. Rustic refers to items which are less complex and detailed, and are more quaint, simple, and functional. A rustic piece wont be fancy and gilded, but it will serve a purpose in the most efficient way possible.

Just because the world seeks to separate us from nature doesn't mean that we have to give in. We can surround ourselves with life and vibrancy, especially in our homes, where we control the environment.

Cave Diving in Florida - Heaven Is a Place on Earth

I thought writing this article would be dead easy as I'd just re-use the emails I sent from abroad, stitch them together and voila - I'd have a ready-made article. I arrived home and figured that perhaps this might not be the brightest of ideas. My emails sound like I'm on some serious drugs... or perhaps I should be on even stronger medication. So I'll make an attempt to restrain my enthusiasm just a tad here... but just quickly - the Florida caves are bloody awesome!!!

caverta

Florida really is heaven on earth... or rather is about as close to heaven as a cave diver can get without abstaining from drinking and spending their entire life helping little old ladies across the road. It is home to some very pretty caves, with beautiful clear tunnels that allow for wonderfully long penetrations and very long dives. It seems that any old cave in Florida resembles a map of our very own Tank cave, with tunnels that just go and go forever... it is hard not to be impressed.

Cave

Summer is usually not the time to hit the caves in Florida as the sweltering heat equals much pain, sweat and suffering whilst gearing up. On the upside many of the caves are virtually deserted which means you can have a whole cave system to yourself. Mind you this type of peace and serenity does not apply to weekends. The hot weekends mean that every man and his dog along with a li-lo and perhaps a beer seem to seek out a watering hole. Thus popular caves become popular swimming holes which means divers have to dodge much traffic and many flinging legs to get to the cave entrance... I'm thinking here of Ginnie in particular. Having said that, swimmers can be a source of much amusement on long deco hangs.

Still, you can't go to Florida and not visit the infamous Ginnie Springs. The place is definitely impressive, not just because of its infinite visibility but also because of the sheer size of the tunnels - you can easily drive a bus through some of them! Further, Ginnie is famous for its flow... if you decide to do your deco in the Ear, be prepared to hang on to the log for dear life. To get into Ginnie without blowing all their gas divers tend to clamber Spiderman style along the ceiling and across the walls. Do as the locals do!

The gold line is great, but so is the flow, so it is not ideal to stay on the main line. Swimming against the current for over 2000 feet is, from personal experience, rather tiresome. The smart thing is to do a jump at the 'park-bench' (don't worry you can't miss it, this is about the time you feel like resting and catching your breath... and conveniently it looks just like its name sake) and head towards the Hillier Tunnel where you will be safely away from the roaring flow. On your way you will find the infamous bats which are very amusing, and also if you look really carefully a bunch of small fossils in the walls and on the floor of the cave. Another nice place to visit is the white room - welcome to the disco! As long as your torch is pointing at the roof and illuminating the hundreds of air pockets you and your buddy can have a little dance.

Another cave with a great deal of flow is Little River and again most people jump off the main line and head through the Mud Tunnel in order to get into the guts of the cave. The recent droughts have reduced the flow, which made my dive here a pleasant dip as opposed to a marathon swim. While spectacular, the cave is a bit spooky with a lot of high vertical fissures and reminded me of a dungeon with so many tunnels all merging into one another. The low flow made the numerous finger marks on the walls seem very out of place and made it seem like something horrific had happened in the tunnels rather than divers simply using the walls to pull themselves against the flow.

Now Peacock is their so called 'training site' but don't be discouraged by this, as it is a very, very distant cousin of Gouldens. Those two are about as related as a centipede is to a unicorn. The Grand Traverse is particularly fun, you descend into Orange Grove and follow a crystal clear tunnel for over 4600 feet before finally exiting in Peacock I. Along the way are various small sinks or 'emergency exits,' which allow you to recalculate your thirds as you go... or if you're like me and have a small bladder, let you jump out for a quick toilet stop. Now, if you left your car at Orange Grove and did the grand tour, guess what, it's a long walk back. Unless of course you can hitch a ride with a bunch of friendly Floridians on the back of a tray - many thanks to the boys!

The grand tour allows you to see some of the best parts of the Peacock system but don't ignore Peacock III. This cave is a bit tighter and a lot more silty than its counterparts, with that thick dark mud that you'd see in Stinging Nettle or Fossils back home, but it's definitely worth a look.

Further up the road is Madison Blue and it is an amazing cave that goes through more 'costume' changes than Whoopi Goldberg hosting the Oscars. Every bit of this cave is different and around each corner is a little surprise; really the place just gets more and more stunning. The biggest surprise for me was that the gold line does not in fact lead all the way through to the famous Rocky Horror and big drop off and instead I found myself jumping off to the Roto-rooter tunnel. This mind you was not the end of the world as taking this jump and following even this small tunnel was still rather extraordinary. But the moral of that story is, if you don't care much where you want to go then it doesn't really matter, but if you're keen to head somewhere in particular... invest in a half decent map!

Cow is a truly wonderful cave and is my personal favorite, if for no other reason that it reminded me of home... you could actually get to the end of the line in this one! Actually cow is my favorite for a number of reasons, its smaller tunnels and various restrictions are challenging but most importantly it is incredibly beautiful. Some parts of it reminded me of Iddlebiddy back home in Oz, as it has some beautiful multi-colored stratified clay banks. To top it off a turtle was visiting the cavern, which made for a perfect distraction during the long deco hang.

At the back of Cow I had my not so smart moment. At the end of the line is a plastic moo cow and for a few seconds I thought to myself, what the hell is a cow doing all the way back here? Then it hit me, like a freight train... duh!

So far I talked about the caves in the Suwanee River Basin, where's a bit of a drive from these caves and part of the Woodville Karst Plain are Jackson Blue and Hole in the Wall. WKP might sound familiar as it's the home of the famous Walkulla Springs. While Walkulla is off limits to divers, Hole in the Wall is not a bad consolation prize. It is a great dive and offers the added attraction of a boat ride through the rather stunning Merritts Mill Pond area. The best part, you get to drive the boat yourself! Jackson Blue is also a beautiful, big and extensive cave and it is certainly worth the drive to this part of the State to dive these two caves.

Apart from the great diving one of my favorite things about the Floridian cave diving scene are the fill stations. Not only do they stock 32% as a standard gas of choice, not only do they charge by the liter rather than by the tank, but you can drive your car up to the filling station, chuck a whip on your tanks and get a fill without dragging the damn gear out or stripping it all off. To top it all off, the gas goes on the tab if you're a regular! Like I said, heaven... One thing's for sure, Mud Hole is definitely off my list of favorite cave sites and the crystal clear, beautiful and seemingly endless tunnels of Florida are definitely on!

I'd like to extend a huge thank you to Lamar Hires and the wonderful bunch at Dive Rite who were all incredibly generous, helpful and truly wonderful. A big thank you also to Scott and Kathleen Byars who took me under their wings and made sure I got wet and to Lamar English who kindly let me use some of his dive gear. It was these guys who made much of my trip possible and I am most grateful.

And of course hats off to the fabulous dive buddies who led the way, or led me astray as the case may be - Scott, Kathleen, Kevin, Lee-Ann, Lamar and Mike!

Cave Hiking - What It Is And What Equipment To Use

Cave hiking is considered to be an extreme sport in some circles. However, extreme sport tends to mean that the people who participate have little regard for safety and that is not true with this sport. Cave hiking is a recreational activity that is quite challenging and requires skills of varying levels depending on the type of cave you're exploring.

cave story

When you go cave hiking, you need equipment to help you navigate. The sport is physically demanding but fun and rewarding. It is similar to mountain climbing and diving in terms of the physical demand required and the rush you get from accomplishing it. Throughout the world there are many caves that you can explore, especially in the larger countries like the United States.

Cave

While cave hiking is not extremely popular, the athletes that do participate in the sport find it quite exciting and different from other sports. There are thousands of caves that can be explored and there are still many that have not yet been explored. If you are new to the activity, you should hire a guide to go with you to make sure that you have a safe trip that is enjoyable - the trip stops being fun when you are trapped in a cave and you don't have the right equipment.

Safety is paramount in cave hiking and there is equipment you need:

LED lights: When you are cave hiking, you should have a few different light sources to help you see in the dark caves. Ideally, you will have a LED headlamp, which is a popular choice of equipment with cave hikers. Headlamps offer you a light source without needing to use your hands. It points in the direction your head is pointed, which is usually where you are headed and need light the most. You will also want to have a LED flashlight with you to shine into other spaces, tight spaces or into a different direction. Lanterns offer a lot of light and are great for lighting up an entire cave. You will want to use LED lights because they offer you a longer battery life and longer bulb life. Always have two light sources with you when cave hiking for extra safety.

Knife: You will need to carry some type of survival knife with you as well while you are cave hiking, such as a Swiss Army knife or hunting knife. A knife is paramount in case you need to cut ropes or vines, etc. while in the cave. It also may be needed if you have to mark your direction in the ground or rock.

Other equipment: Items like ropes, helmets, carabineers, hiking boots, water and food are additional items you will want to carry with you when cave hiking. It is best to check with a guide or take a course with a guide on what is the appropriate equipment and attire for the particular area you will be hiking. Don't cave hike on your own until you have done so with a proper guide.

Always remember - safety first. Tell someone that you are going hiking, when you are entering the cave, where it is located and when you expect to return. This is to ensure that if something goes wrong and you don't return on time, someone knows where to begin the search. Always ensure that if you are new to the area or new to the cave that you take a guide with you who is experienced in that area and cave. This will ensure that you are safe throughout the hike and that you have fun.

2010 Tax Relief Act: New Strategies Individual Taxpayers Need to Know

Hooray! The long awaited tax changes have finally been signed into law. The President finally signed into law the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization and Job Creation Act of 2010. (Try saying that fast 3 times in a row!)

esata external hard drive

Let's keep things simple and refer to this as the 2010 Tax Relief Act. So the question is: Is this truly tax relief? Or is it a disguised tax increase? Well....the answer is Yes and No. The 2010 Tax Bill, costing Americans 7 Billion dollars, does include some pretty significant tax cuts, although not all of them will result in tax savings for us. Rather than addressing ALL the big and small changes, we want to break out the tax changes into a 3 article series: Individual Taxpayers, Business Owners, and Real Estate Investors. Each of these articles will address the changes as it relates specifically to these types of taxpayers as well as strategies that you can implement to take full advantage of the new tax cuts.

CUTS ACROSS THE BOARD

First, let's start with the good stuff that benefits individual taxpayers in general. Individual income tax rates will remain at their current levels across the board throughout 2011 and 2012 instead of increasing across the board as previously enacted. What does mean? Well, for an individual earning ,000, this means a federal income tax savings just under 0 per year. The reduced tax rate for all individuals is something of significance to note because there are a lot of related planning opportunities. One example is for those individuals who converted their retirement funds to a Roth account before December 31, 2010, Kudos to you! You can now enjoy the benefits of spreading any taxes that you may have to pay into the 2011 and 2012 year knowing confidently that tax rates are not going up! This means your ability to start your retirement account on its path to Tax FREE growth, delaying the related taxes, and not having to compromise to a bigger tax bill with increased rates.

ADDITIONAL ,136 TAX SAVINGS

Another REALLY great tax relief is a 2% cut to Social Security taxes (i.e. payroll taxes). Although 2% may seem like a small number, this 2% reduction is expected to put up to an additional ,136 back into each worker's pocket in 2011. One of the most important things to note is that this tax cut benefits all taxpayers, regardless of income level. This is one of those really rare tax benefits that do not discriminate against higher income individuals and anyone can take advantage of!

AMT RELIEF & OUTLOOK

The new legislation put together yet another "temporary" patch for middle income taxpayers under the Alternative Minimum Tax (AMT) patch. The AMT patch will save 21 million taxpayers that would have otherwise paid higher taxes for 2010. As an example, we have a client who owns a handful of investments properties and a management company in the state of California. The AMT patch will save him somewhere close to ,000 in taxes in the 2010 year. Of course, we all know that when we as taxpayers save money, this means we are at the same time adding to our country's deficit. The AMT patch alone is estimated to cost us 6 Billion. In our third article series, we will share a shocking proposal that the Treasury is working on to raise tax dollars that will impact all of us. Be sure to look out for our upcoming article next week!

KIDS & DEPENDENT STRATEGIES

If you have kids under age 18, you can take advantage of a great tool to help your children pay for college with the Coverdell Education Savings Accounts (ESA). The 2010 tax Relief allows certain taxpayers to contribute up to ,000 per child into the account. The money in that bucket can be invested into stocks & bonds, or self-directed into most types of alternative assets including gold and real estate! What most people do not know is that the ESA is extremely flexible... you do not have to wait until college to utilize the funds for your kids. Money from the ESA can actually be utilized for expenses for your child's elementary and secondary schools too! We have a client who self-directed his kids' ESA money into Super Bowl tickets and profited over ,000 in just a few months. All that profit is not only tax free but it can remain in the ESA and make additional investments for more tax free growth. When they decide to take that money out to be used for elementary or college expenses, they will pay zero taxes on that as well. Now that is the power of tax savings and wise investing!

For taxpayers with kids under age 17, you may continue to take advantage of the child tax credit of up to ,000 for 2011 and 2012. If you pay for expenses for the care of your child or other dependent so that you can work, don't forget to claim a Dependent Care Credit of up to ,100 on your tax return for this year!

ESTATE & GIFTING OPPORTUNITIES

The highly anticipated estate tax change was finally determined as part of the 2010 Tax Relief Bill. Most taxpayers will be happy to know that the estate tax exemption was increased from million per person all the way up to million per person and the top tax rate will remain at the lower 35%. This is a significant change especially for high net worth families because now the dollar amount that is exempt from estate taxes is million for married couples. For the first time, the estate, gift and generation-skipping taxes will be "unified" so that one million exemption per individual applies to all three. This will make it much easier for wealthy taxpayers to make gifts during life to children & grandchildren. If you are a taxpayer who is in a high paying tax bracket, now is a really great time to plan for ways to shift some of your income to other family members who may be in lower tax brackets. There are countless ways that you can use Family Limited Partnerships to shift income to lower taxed family members without losing control of those assets. With the current depressed market values and the new million exemption, now is the time to get your tax and estate planning in place!

As you can see, for the individual tax payers, the 2010 Tax relief resulted in a win-win for low, middle, and high income taxpayers. With all the new tax breaks, it is imperative that we as taxpayers do our part to ensure we are taking full advantage of these benefits. As part of your Goal Planning for 2011, make tax savings part of that plan! Join us next week as we focus on Part 2 of our 3 Part Series: 2010 Tax Relief Act: New Strategies Business Owners Need to Know.

Every Cave Man Needs a Man Cave

A man cave, to those who are unfamiliar with the latest terminology, is the area man species considers his personal domain, within his family abode. Man caves can be the unfinished basement, outdoor shed, detached garage, or the bonus room of his home. The manly domain can and has evolved into quite an organized and rather attractive domain for many a cave man.

caveman costume

Man caves have become quite popular from the standpoint of décor and the personalizing of the domain with the latest electronics, game tables, and other manly furniture. These caves have become a fashion statement for the male species.

Cave

As male teenagers of the 70's, we would hangout in the unfinished basement of my best friends parents house where all the parties, meetings, and after school get together happened, and when our dates were over, we would eventually come back to the original pre-man cave, basement locale, after our dates, to really enjoy the weekend, male bonding. Where doing stupid stunts, streaking, smoking and blowing our smoke up the chimney, and doing some underage drinking, were a few of the memorable things we did in the basement.

A current day manly abode is one that requires more modern and elaborate displays of the male talent in decorating his man cave, yet maintaining the masculine touches when all is said and done.

A typical cave domain will have neon lights, sports heroes, framed of course, and a bar, instead of the simple cooler with iced down brews. An area designated for entertaining the guys and the tools and toys area are a must have for the proper décor.

The man's designated space is all about personalizing the area the man has been given to himself to decorate based on his personal interests and to display his prideful tools, toys, and TV. No domain is ever complete without having access to sporting events, so incorporating a nice size flat screen is the mark of an excellent cave abode. A place where you know all it takes, is to put the word out; 'Man Caves Meeting Tonight', and your manly cave will be hosting several cavemen over for a few brews.

If you are looking to upgrade, spice up, or totally makeover your man cave with the ultimate in manly décor, then you'll definitely want to see what is now available at an incredibly affordable, do-it-yourself project.

Interpreting Plato's Cave

In Plato's Allegory, prisoners are chained, completely motionless in a cave, and shadows of puppets are cast on the walls. The prisoners are unaware of the actual cause of the shadows and believe the shadows are unique, independent entities. But one of the prisoners is let free and discovers the true source of the shadows. He ventures out of the cave and into the world above where he is confronted with nature and the sun. Thereafter, he is compelled to return to the cave and share what he has learned. His eyesight must readapt to the darkness, so initially the other prisoners assume the light has ruined his vision; he appears incompetent, and his knowledge of a considerably more accurate reality will seem ridiculous.

Plato's cave is a profound allegory with many interpretations, and the following is only what I believe it may represent.

Cave

Plato uses the shadows on the wall to illustrate the limits of human knowledge. The depths of the cave represent a realm of less intelligence and understanding. He is implying that our perceptions deceive us, and he wants us to reconsider what we think we know and then strive for truth. The prisoner was certain there was no other world beyond that of the cave, but his rendezvous above ground altered his perceptions. He realizes yet another aspect of reality and a higher state of being.

It is likely that the blinding sun represents the source of life, and the all-knowing heavenly bodies-an aspect of reality and knowledge unknown to humans.

The enlightened prisoner does not want to return to a world that is less real, or to a realm of less intelligence. His vision is impaired from the light when he returns to the cave below, which seems to imply that the enlightened appear ridiculous to the fool, and the fool is reluctant to become enlightened because he fears what he does not know. It might also suggest that knowledge is a burden, but nonetheless sacred and indispensable. Furthermore, it is the duty of those enlightened to share their knowledge, regardless of the consequences; incidentally, that is what got Socrates killed.

21st Century Cave Houses in Andalucia, Spain

The traditional habitation in and around the Altiplano de Granada, Andalucia, Spain is the cave house. It is thought that it was the Moors from North Africa who first started excavating these dwellings into the hillsides and cliff faces of this area. Some of these cave houses, dating back to the 12thC, can still be seen in villages such as Benamaurel. Some of the villages of this tranquil region still have a high proportion of their population living in caves.

cavender's greek seasoning

Not only have cave houses been lived in continuously since Moorish times but they are still being constructed today using modern methods and materials.

Cave

A few years ago this almost forgotten area was discovered by foreign property buyers, mainly British. They found that there were modestly priced homes to be bought, some of which had been modernised to high standards by professional builders. They also found that there was an abundance of old fashioned and neglected properties which could be bought cheaply and converted into lovely, individualistic, 21stC, eco-friendly, character homes.

Cave houses are so well insulated that they remain at a constant 18-20 degrees Celsius throughout the year thus reducing fuel bills. Most village caves and many country caves have access to mains electricity. The owners of those caves that do not have mains power often install the latest generation of solar electricity and water heating equipment and/or windmills. There are grants available from the Andalucian authorities.

Cave homes lend themselves to innovative renovation. Many of the old style cave properties had underground rooms for keeping livestock, donkeys, mules, pigs, chickens, etc. Mangers were carved into walls, ventilation and animal feed shafts rose to the surface of the ground above. All the traditional features of cave houses are exploited by the 21stC troglodyte. Stables become extra bedrooms or bathrooms. Mangers become dressing-tables or bookshelves. Feed chutes become light wells illuminating the darker recesses of the modern cave persons' home. The freshly plastered rounded walls and ceilings are covered in light reflecting paint. Abandoned bread ovens are brought back into use as pizza ovens or become extra storage space. Traditional open fire places boast the latest types of eco-friendly solid fuel stoves. Stamped earth or cement floors are beautifully tiled.

Tastefully renovated cave dwellings gain in character rather than lose it. With the careful use of modern materials the professional or amateur cave developers is only limited by their imaginations and, of course, their budgets. The good news on the latter point is that those who are keeping a careful eye on their cash situation can be pleasantly surprised at just how much can be achieved quite economically.

Tens Of Thousands Of Illegal Workers Claiming Benefits In The UK

It has recently been revealed that the previous Labour government allowed some 155,000 illegal immigrants to be able to qualify not only for sickness benefits but also maternity pay. It has been estimated that the cost to the Exchequer runs into "tens of millions of pounds".

esata to sata

There can be no doubt that this total shambles is a highly critical indictment of how Labour totally lost control of not only the immigration systems but also the benefit systems also. To help resolve matters it is anticipated that Ian Duncan Smith the Work & Pensions Secretary will halt this practice by bringing in new welfare reform legislation early next week.

Esa

It is believed that those who are exploiting the system for financial gain came to Britain for a short period and then stayed on after their visa had expired. Many illegal immigrants probably got work with out having the required work permit.

At the moment if someone was in Britain illegally they would be able to claim ESA which is Employment and Support Allowance which is paid to those to ill to work and be in a position to claim sick pay and maternity and paternity pay.

Quite unbelievably the Department of Work & Pensions had not previously requested to examine work permits when approving claims for ESA.

Surprisingly under Labour, hundreds of thousands of National Insurance numbers were handed out to illegal workers as there was no requirement to check if the person was in the country legally. Quite reasonably many employers incorrectly thought that having a NI number meant that they were legally in the country. Employers also have not had to show any proof that employees are in the UK legally when making claims for maternity or paternity pay and sick pay.

This beggars the belief that people who are not even eligible to work in Gt Britain are able to get benefits which are a substitute for earnings. This is a classic example of how the UK state welfare system has been allowed by the previous Labour government to get totally out of kilter.

Work permits will now be needed showing that workers are here legally for ESA claims or an employer will require to have one if processing claims on behalf of employees. Rather than removing illegal workers the last Labour government was prepared to pay out welfare benefits to some tens of thousands of people who had plainly overstayed their visa entitlement.

I am a great believer in a social system but obviously it should be one that is properly run and managed so that benefits are paid out to those who are properly entitled and have contributed into the social system.

It simply can't be right just to allow any body to claim in the naive hope perhaps that an over generous welfare system will buy votes.

A Sign of Maturing - Trade Shows Without Booth Babes

The rationale behind hiring a trade show model is simple - nail the first impression by leveraging the old advertising maxim of sex selling. And for years the trade show model was a staple, pulling show-going crowds towards booths and hopefully towards products. Recently, though, trade show models, or as they are more commonly known "booth babes," have been going the way of the caribou. Case-in-point, the 2008 SHOT Show, previously known for its pairing of guns and babes, was so lacking in trade show models that Field and Stream Magazine was forced to pad their annual review of models with pictures of men sporting unusually long beards, and causing many readers to question, why are exhibitors messing with a good thing?

esata card

In 2006, the Electronic Software Association (ESA), the trade group behind the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) issued a press release stating that for the first time, the dress code, typically flouted by models, would be enforced. And by "enforced" the ESA meant a warning followed by a 00 fine. Common motives associated with this new rule enforcement stemmed from the reputation of the trade show (previously described by IGN's David Adams as "ribald"), the fear that the ESA was marketing sexually-explicit content to children, and the fact that the video game industry was reaching sales parity with Hollywood. There is, of course, a common thread between these arguments: the product didn't need the sex, instead it needed to be viewed as professional. For the ESA, the video game had matured beyond the quick, impulsive sell that sex grants, and was finally a legitimate part of living rooms around the world.

Esa

The ESA was telling exhibitors to do something every trade show exhibitor should be doing anyways, they should be considering their brand. Whether you are an entrepreneur, an executive, or merely an employee, trade shows are worked with the explicit intent of drawing quality attention to your brand. The trade show exhibitor is there to build excitement that should ultimately turn a booth visitor into a repeat customer. The booth is a means to forging a lasting relationship on a personal basis. Working a booth allows a company to press the flesh and promote with a passion that simply can't be found in traditional advertising. So, why would a company risk potentially isolating half the attendees at a conference with a booth babe?

Half? Well, close to it. According to a survey conducted by AffiliateTip.com, 70% of the female respondents and 41% of the male respondents (56% overall) said that they were less likely to visit a booth that used a booth babe. Conversely, 29% of the overall respondents said that a booth babe caused a null opinion, and a mere 15% said that a booth babe would positively impact their opinion of a booth. Perusing blogs will lead to an even larger mountain of anecdotal evidence that suggests that not only are individuals less likely to visit your trade show displays if a booth babe is present, but they are actually more likely to form a negative opinion of your company to boot.

Of course, not all trade shows are following the trend presented by the ESA, yet booth babes seem to be disappearing just the same. The use of booth babes at YAPC (Yet Another Perl Convention) sparked a thread on the Use Perl official message board regarding whether or not booth babes should be used at other conference. The quote that seemed to sum the experience up was "that is so auto show."

The debate surrounding the use of booth babes even leaves the trade show, with various media outlets debating about whether they should continue to feature photos of the "best" babes, often opening up the discussion to readers. Tom's Hardware, a forum and media outlet focusing on technology posed the question to their readership and the first response cut to the heart of the issue - juxtaposing the 'for' being juvenile and mainstream against the 'opposed' being adult and technical. Tech Republic, also opened the question up to their readers, and gathered likewise responses. It seemed that even the media was turning their backs on booth babes.

There is, of course, one final theory on why exhibitors were shying away from trade show models. At the 2006 E3, Disney was there presenting the video game tie in for their Pixar animated feature "Cars." There between near-life-size examples of the film's star cars was, you guessed it, a trade show model. The model in question was decked out from head to toe in skintight black jumpsuit, complete with plunging neckline and a checkered-flag racking stripe running up her sides, and covering just enough to show that Disney could play by the new E3 rules. Perhaps the world at large saw Disney's display as truly jumping the shark and everyone simply moved on.

Whichever theory you subscribe to - maintaining an professional image, fear of isolating potential clients, or merely staying one step ahead of Disney, the use of trade show models are certainly on the decline. And as John Davis, editorial director for Ziff Davis Media Game Group told ABC News, "Not having the booth babes isn't going to make any difference." Instead, of babes, the new trend seems to be presenting your products in a professional manner, with booth workers who go beyond gimmick or sex and instead have a passion for your brand and a knowledge base to match. Guess which one leads to more quality sales?

Environmental Site Assessment - Why Do You Need It?

In the movie Erin Brockovich, the character of Julia Roberts was neck-deep in investigation about the suspicious activities of Pacific Gas and Electric Company, which led to the eventual poisoning and death of the residents nearby the area. After going through a series of unproductive meetings among lawyers, residents and owners the company was soon charged of buying a piece of land that was already contaminated. So what does the movie have to do with you, you ask? It tells you that you can avoid this situation by getting an Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) for your subject property.

esata

Of course, nobody wants his company to undergo the same mishaps as seen in the movie. Court trials are time consuming and litigation lawyers charge too expensively that you just want to settle things under the table. Plus a suspicious site would lessen its credibility and drive people away from it.

Esa

Naturally, you would want to retain the value of your property and not get into any kind of legal trouble of any sort. You can do this through Environmental Site Assessment. Some of you, like me, are probably still wondering what this program can do for your company. Through Phase 1 ESA, you can rest assured that your property is free from potential environmental liabilities like toxicity or contamination. Professional consultants will determine whether the land you own or are planning to buy is a potential environmental threat because, or what are better known as "brownfield sites".

In the 1970s, a similar study was done in the United States to inspect commercial properties and to test them whether they are potentially hazardous to health. Now, the US has stricter monitoring than ever when it comes to environmental issues. Before you could actually have an acquisition or a management buy-out, you need to abide first by the environmental due diligence-a kind of investigation which identifies environmental hazards. It will give you details on how a former or a current operation poses a potential risk for your employees and nearby residents.

The inspection will tell you in detail the history of the chosen property, how the former operations contributed to possible environmental hazards, and how you could verify legal compliance from regulation authorities.

Tests are conducted by industrial hygiene consultants. These professionals see to it that every nook and cranny of your would-be land acquisition is scrutinized, looking for loopholes such that lead to toxicological risks. A property condition assessment is done to check whether if the health and safety requirements mandated by the State are met. Industrial hygiene consultants perform samplings and assessments, all of which are then turned over to an accredited laboratory for further evaluation. They also see to it that investigations, which include an expert witness testimony and an assessment of workers compensations claims, are done in a discreet and professional manner.

Aside from industrial hygiene consultants, you may also seek help from other companies on environmental engineering services. The services included on this one are feasibility studies, construction oversight, waste management consultation and other facility design services. You can address the underlying issues of pollution or contamination through environmental remediation. Avoid getting into grave legal issues on environmental safety by having your company go through Environmental Site Assessment.

What Is The Function Of an Environmental Consulting Firm?

The task of environmental consulting firm is important to our society; they offer an array of services towards assessment of business or industrial sites from an environmental point of view. The services the particular environmental consulting firm provides centers on the inspection of future development sites and remediation of sites that are detected having contamination problems which needs environmental services and remediation. They also aid clients and remediation contractors about very good environmental strategies for normal operations.

esata cable

For the most part, environmental consulting firms have multi-disciplinary staff to address a variety of different concerns. They employ the help of competent employers like environmental scientists, chemists, environmental engineers, geologists and many other staff having scientific backgrounds.

Esa

A large environmental consulting firm might include a laboratory for conducting analyses of samples or the laboratory functions possibly are subcontracted to another facility. Plus some might also have remediation contractors.

Due to the increased focus on environmental concerns, new commercial development isn't going to be pushed through without having some kind of environmental evaluation. A potential new owner often wants to know if perhaps there are any issues of contamination and does not desire to be answerable for them in case a remediation and environmental service is important. Potential developers are concerned with matters including groundwater contamination from petroleum products or pesticides or toxic contamination in buildings from asbestos, lead, or mold. A preliminary environmental site assessment or an ESA is the normal 1st step to embark on.

The 1st step of ESA incorporates an evaluation of prior businesses conducted at the site, permits given for the site, as well as observations of the land and buildings for signs of conntamination. It would include the analysis of nearby properties, air quality issues, draining in addition to the topography of the site. Just in case the studies show possible issues, the potential developer may ask for a further assessment through actual soil, groundwater, and residue sampling. The sampling is conducted under the phase 2 of ESA.

If the outcomes of the sampling show a contamination problem then a phase 3 ESA will be started in order to plan and organize the property's remediation. When the company is already aware about the contamination they may retain the services of an environmental consulting firm. The consultant is essential to manage the completion of the environmental services and remediation project. Projects including remediation and environmental services usually takes years and may necessitate a huge number of samples and the removal of large volumes of polluted material.

These stated consultants can at the same time offer environmental services to businesses to aid them get in compliance and stay in compliance with the myriad of environmental regulations that happen to be existing these days.

Hazardous material handling, underground storage tank management, storage, and shipping concerns, and development of spill prevention and control plans are the problems that may addressed by environmental consultants. In addition, some may also guide clients on the storage, and shipping concerns, and development of spill prevention and control plans measures that guarantee a secure and safe working environment for laborers.

They help corporations develop "green" architectural structures and lessen the carbon footprint of the operations. They also focus and evaluate a different area that is energy conservation so that you can save companies money and boost the business' "environment friendly" level.

-Parents who open ESA's have many investment choices and total control over how their money is invested.

-At the end of 2010, provisions will be changed to exclude withdrawals for elementary or secondary education.

-The money in ESA's must be used before the beneficiary turns 30, at which point the money will be distributed to the beneficiary at a 10% tax rate.

- Money in the account is considered the child's asset which can hurt their chances of being approved for financial aid.

-This is the best option for parents whose children will be attending public schools in the same state where they live.

Advantages and Disadvantages of College Savings Accounts

College is expensive and the options available to save for it are many. How do we know if as a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian of a child that we are investing in our child's future in the most effective way with the least amount of tax burden? Unlike money in a parent, grandparent, or legal guardian's name, money invested in a child's college savings account such as a 529 Qualified Tuition Plan, a 529 Prepaid Tuition plan, or an Education Savings Account (ESA) like a
Coverdell can be allowed to gain interest federal tax-free.

esata to sata

In addition to offering a tax break by avoiding capital gains taxes, a college savings account allow some states to allow prepaid tuition plans, with or without limits on how much of the investment will receive a tax break. Additionally, withdrawals made for qualified higher education expenses do not incur any taxes or penalties through the Internal Revenue Services. Non-qualifying expenditures may avoid penalties under special circumstances such as receiving a scholarship, or in circumstances of disability or death.

Esa

529 Qualified Tuition Plans or 529 Prepaid Tuition Plans are not the only options for future-conscious investors to save for their child's education. Other options include the Coverdell Education Savings Account which not only can it be used on college expenses but also on qualifying elementary and secondary school expenses without penalty. Like the other plans, the Coverdell Education Savings Account does penalize for non-qualifying expenditures.

Most 529 College Savings Accounts as well as the 529 Prepaid Tuition Plan do not have residency restrictions. However, in some states, either the student beneficiary or the account contributor must live in the same state the college savings account, prepaid tuition plan, or educational savings account was established.

The significant disadvantage to using a 529 plan or other ESA is the total contributions limit compared to a lack of the same on a traditional or non-educational savings account. Depending on the state from which the 529 or ESA account was purchased, maximum contributions must be under 0,000 in total for a 529 college savings account or ,000 annually for a Coverdell ESA per beneficiary. Additionally, select plans may also have limits on how much of an annual gift to an educational account can be considered for a deduction in taxes.

Whenever you research something, try to get to the essence of what you are studying. I learned that as a philosophy major. It is true of mundane areas as well. As you search for college savings accounts try and reach the best value, definitions and clarity. Read what we have on our site on savings accounts and if you need more material on this you can always go to the world wide web again to finish up on your studies.
