Fish Oil 101 - How To Define Omega 3 Fatty Acids And Know The Difference Between DHA And EPA

Much is written about increasing ones intake of omega 3 fatty acids. It seems every website, magazine or newspaper has something to say about which type of omega 3 fish oil one should use.

It can be a bit confusing for someone who is just trying to find the right foods and/or supplements to keep their health at optimal levels or to help deal with an illness or disease they currently have.

There are three basic types of omega 3 fatty acids; they are eicosapentaenoic acid or EPA, docosahexaenoic acid or DHA, and alpha-linolenic acid or ALA. The first two EPA and DHA are found in foods such as fish, fish oil supplements, and algae. These forms of fatty acids are long-chain forms of the omega 3 acids.

The final type is ALA and it is a short-chain form which is found in plant sources such as seeds, walnuts, soybean oil and in some green leafy vegetables. These are all good sources of omega 3s and the only difference is that short-chain forms take longer to process since they must first be converted into a long-chain form.

It is not entirely clear whether short-chain forms of omega 3 fatty acids work in the same manner as their counterparts, long-chain forms. Many believe that ALA, the short-term form of omega 3 does not provide the same benefits as EPA and DHA.

This is especially true in dealing with heart disease. Some recommend that patients, especially heart patients, pay more attention to the amounts of EPA and DHA in their omega 3 fish oil supplements. They feel there should be a 3 to 2 ratio of the EPA and DHA. Still others do not see things in the same way.

They are of the belief that as long as one is relatively healthy and eats a balanced diet, consuming lots of dark green, leafy vegetables, walnuts and ground flax seeds then the ALA supplement should be sufficient.

In order to determine which route would be most beneficial in your particular situation it would be wise to consult with your physician or health care worker. They will know your individual needs and issues and can weigh the pros and cons of each type of omega 3 fish oil supplements against what your body needs.

In some cases a physician may need to run a specialized blood test to analyze your fatty acid profile. This is an expensive test, but in some cases your physician may deem it necessary.

New Loan Limits Set For FHA Mortgages and FHA Refinance Loans

On Monday HUD announced its new, permanent maximum loan limits for FHA Mortgages and FHA Refinance Loans that will become effective on Janurary 1st, 2009. These new maximum loan limits have been set as part of The Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 and will be permanent limits.

Under the Housing and Economic Recovery Act of 2008 (HERA), which passed in July 2008, the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA) was established and directed to set conforming loan limits each year. The rules governing how the loan limits are established differ from the rules set forth in the Economic Stimulus Act of 2008 (ESA), which applies to loans originated in 2008. For example, under ESA, loan limits for high-cost areas were set at 125 percent of local house price medians and the maximum high-cost limit was 175 percent of the national conforming limit (9,750 in the continental U.S.).

Starting January 1st, the national loan limit for one-unit homes in the lower 48 states shall be pegged to a house price index chosen by the FHFA. The national loan limit for 2009 will remain at 7,000. In future years, the mortgage limit for any given area shall be set at 115 percent of the median house price in that area, as determined by HUD, except that the FHA mortgage limit in any given area cannot exceed 150 percent of the Freddie Mac national loan limit, nor be lower than 65 percent of the Freddie Mac national loan limit.

This essentially creates the "Floor" and the "Ceiling" for the maximum FHA loan amount for a given area with the lowest maximum FHA loan amount being 1,050 in any area and the highest FHA loan amount being 625,500. Alaska, Hawaii, Guam and the USVI may be adjusted to 150% of these limits to account for higher costs.

The new FHA Mortgage limits for 2009 are detailed below:

In areas where 115 percent of the median house price is less than 65 percent of the Freddie Mac limit, the FHA limits are set at the 65 percent amount, i.e., the "Floor," as follows:

One-Unit 1,050

Two-Unit 7,000

Three-Unit 9,400

Four-Unit 1,250

Any area where the limits exceed the floor is known as a high cost area. In areas where 115 percent of the median house price exceeds the 150 percent figure, the mortgage limits are set at the 150 percent amount, i.e., the "Ceiling," as follows:

One-Unit 5,500

Two-Unit 0,775

Three-Unit 7,950

Four-Unit ,202,925

For all other areas, i.e., those where 115 percent of the median home price for the area is in between the floor and the ceiling, the limit shall be at 115 percent of the median home price.

Deflecting a Comet or Asteroid with Another Asteroid or a Nuclear Missile Debated

An acquaintance of mine who has studied asteroids for decades, namely preventing one, a big one from hitting Earth has convinced himself that we need nukes, lots of them to either deflect or destroy said asteroid(s). Does this make any sense scientifically? Sure it does - got a better idea? Will it work is your next question, well it might, but realize some of these asteroids are huge as in kilometers long, and the bigger they are the harder to divert, deflect, or destroy (D3).

Is the human race up for the challenge? Well, put it this way, if a large asteroid is coming towards Earth, we win or lose, sink or swim, adapt and survive or perish and become extinct like our friends the dinosaurs did. See that point - it is do or die, and we can't get this one wrong. It's the kind of war you can't lose, or you lose all. Not just you, and your family, but the whole human race and all the species we've evolved with here on Earth, friend or foe (think pesky mosquitoes as a nuisance or foe).

Nukes in Space?

Ah ha, yes a sticky subject, as no one really wants to weaponize space, and initiate Star Wars, surely we've done enough fighting here on Earth, and for sure human beings need to get a life and grow up, indeed, I am sure you agree. Nevertheless, if we wait to solve this problem until we know an asteroid is indeed about to hit us, then it could very well be too late.

So, who should be in charge of saving the human race - the UN, NATO, ESA (European Space Agency), NASA, US Military, or all the militaries of the world regardless of their differences? The answer is YES. Perhaps all those - and with that thought in mind I sincerely hope you will consider all this, because we need a plan, we need one now, and it's time to set up a serious Planetary Defense System to win!
