Knowing How Much Omega-3 Fatty Acids To Take Is Important For Good Health

Almost everyone these days has heard about the importance of omega 3 fatty acids and, therefore, want to know how much omega-3 to take on a daily basis.

There are several factors you must consider if you want to buy the best omega-3 supplement.

Ala

But, first, let's discuss the topic of how much omega-3 one needs to take on a daily basis.

Unfortunately, there is no set rule. The amount is going to be different if you are 30 years old than it would be if you are 65. It may also vary if you have a health condition.

For purposes of this article, we will simply give a ballpark figure of what you might want to take to maintain good health, assuming you are an adult with a reasonable degree of good health currently.

Before we discuss dosage, you should understand something important. It's not the amount you take that should be of first importance. Rather, it's the ratio of your omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acid intake.

The optimal ratio is 1:1. Most people nowadays in the Western world consume 20 times more omega 6's than omega 3's.

So, to start, you should reduce your consumption of omega 6 oils, as this unbalanced ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 can lead to numerous serious health disasters.

Here are sources high in omega 6's that you'll want to reduce before looking for the best omega-3 supplement: corn oil, sunflower and safflower oil, and soybean oil. Many people cook with these oils, so if you do too, substitute it for something else like olive oil.

Another thing to consider before you think about how much omega-3 oils to take is to know that there are three types of omega 3 fatty acids. There is DHA, EPA, and ALA.

ALA is the type found in plant sources, such as flaxseed and walnuts.

DHA and EPA are the type found in fish.

Fish sources are better because ALA from plant sources needs to be converted by the body into DHA and EPA and this conversion does not always take place efficiently.

Now, if you are wondering if you should just eat more fish or take a fish oil supplement, there is no contest. You should opt for the supplement -- as long as its high quality.

This is simply because most of the fish caught from the Ocean waters This is precisely why the FDA advocates a limited consumption of various types of fish -- because they contain dangerous toxins, like lead, PCB's, and mercury.

Farm raised fish is not much better because they are fed pellets, not their natural diet. It is their natural diet that is responsible for their high omega 3 fatty acid content. As such, farm raised fish are poor sources of omega 3's.

The best omega-3 supplement will be molecularly distilled fish oil high in DHA and EPA. Molecular distillation is a process by which the impurities are separated from the healthy oils, leaving only the good stuff and discarding the bad stuff.

Another distinction is that DHA omega 3 fats are the most important type, and have a greater impact on good health than EPA. As an example, about 60% of the human brain is comprised of fats, and approximately half of that is DHA!

Therefore, when you look at how much omega-3 is on the label of a high quality fish oil supplement, make sure you know the breakdown between DHA and EPA. They are not all the same, because different species of fish have different levels of these important fatty acids.

Having said all of this, a healthy adult should consider taking approximately 1,000 mg per day of omega 3 fatty acids, with more of that being DHA than EPA.

In summary, the best omega-3 supplement will be: a) made with a type of fish naturall high in DHA and EPA (with more DHA than EPA); will be molecularly distilled; and contain about 1,000 omega 3 fatty acids in total.

The Health Benefits of Kale

When you mention kale, the majority will look up with raised eyebrows and mumble "What"? "What's that"? An old, hardly spoken of and powerful green food. Kale is a leafy green vegetable with a mild earthy flavor. The season for kale is between mid winter and early spring where it can be found in abundance in most produce sections of the local grocery store. However, one can find kale year round. Thankfully, kale is starting to garner well deserved attention due its nutrient rich phytochemical content which provides unparalleled health promoting benefits.

Kale absolutely rich and abundant in calcium, lutein, iron, and Vitamins A, C, and K. Kale has seven times the beta-carotene of broccoli and ten times more lutein. Kale is rich in Vitamin C not to mention the much needed fiber so lacking in the daily diet of processed food eating Americans. The "Icing on the Kale" are the natural occurring all important phytochemicals sulforaphane and indoles which research suggests may protect against cancer. Let's not forget the all important antioxidant Vitamin E. Rest assured kale spares nothing in providing one with much needed nutrients and associated health benefits.

Cave

The naturally rich sulfur content of kale deserves a bit more discussion. Science has discovered that sulforaphane, helps boost the body's detoxification enzymes, possibly by altering gene expression. This is turn is purported to help clear carcinogenic substances in a timely manner. Sulforaphane is formed when cruciferous vegetables like kale are chopped or chewed. This somehow triggers the liver to produce enzymes that detoxify cancer causing chemicals, of which we all are exposed on daily basis. A recently new study in the Journal of Nutrition (2004) demonstrates that sulforaphane helps stop breast cancer cell proliferation.

Kale descends from the wild cabbage which originated in Asia and is thought to have been brought to Europe by the Celtics. Kale was an important food item in early European history and a crop staple in ancient Rome. Kale was brought to the USA during the 17th century by English settlers.

A leafy green vegetable starting to gain widespread attention, kale belongs to the Brassica family, a group that also includes cabbage, collard greens and Brussels sprouts. Choose kale with small leaves as they will be tenderer and offer a sweeter taste. Make kale leaves a regular addition to your salads. A sautéed side dish of kale, onions, and garlic drizzled in olive oil is second to none. Enjoy your kale. You'll be glad did.

Alpha Lipoic Acid - Fountain of Youth, Fountain of Health

Alpha Lipoic Acid has been available commercially for about 10 years and is slowly creeping into the consciousness of the general public. Based on scientific studies published over the past year, this little-known antioxidant may well turn out to be society's answer to the woes of aging and poor health. These studies have revealed a host of dramatic health benefits and have demonstrated that ALA has the potential to improve physical health, mental health and, perhaps most exciting, literally slow down the process of aging.

alarm system

In terms of mental health, a 2007 study published by the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (with researchers from the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University, University of Toronto, University of California-Berkeley, Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute and Juvenon) concluded that ALA, taken as a nutritional supplement, improved the memory, the ability to learn, and the cognitive function of geriatric dogs.

Ala

The key to the improvement seen in these areas is ALA's effect on mitochondria. Known as the "cell's power plant," mitochondria supply most of a cell's energy, however growing research suggests it may be among the first cellular components to be damaged by oxidation and free radicals. Alpha Lipoic Acid, in combination with Acetyl-L-Carnitine (ALC), has the unique ability to step in and actually slow down mitochondrial decay.

Evidence of the positive effects of ALA was seen after 15 weeks of training older dogs, supplemented by the two antioxidants, to find a food treat by visually identifying a particular marker. 80 percent of dogs taking the supplement were able to find the hidden food whereas only 50 percent of dogs not taking the supplement were successful. In this case, ALA improved object/spatial discernment in dogs, the decline of which in humans is a sign of dementia.

In terms of physical health, two studies have suggested major areas where Alpha Lipoic Acid, in combination with ALC, has the potential to prevent and reverse damage from chronic disease. A study conducted at the Institute for Brain Aging and Dementia showed how ALA might mitigate the effects of Diabetes, and another study, conducted by scientists at the Linus Pauling Institute and College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University and the Department of Medicine at the University of Washington, showed improvement in the treatment of Atherosclerosis and obesity.

These studies showed that ALA, when taken regularly, helps normalize insulin signaling and glucose metabolism, in addition to resetting and normalizing the entire metabolic process, hence the potential for stabilizing and minimizing the effects of diabetes. The studies also showed that a steady diet of ALA can inhibit the formation of arterial lesions, lower triglycerides, and reduce blood vessel inflammation, all of which are vital to preventing cardiovascular disease.

Alpha Lipoic Acid has also been shown to inhibit weight gain through several actions. It suppresses the appetite while it stimulates both the metabolic rate and higher levels of physical activity. The proof lies in the mice given ALA supplements; they chose to eat less and run around more. Consequently they gained less weight than the control group given the same amount of food.

And finally, moving one step closer to that ever-elusive fountain of youth, a study conducted by scientists at the Linus Pauling Institute at Oregon State University has shown that Alpha Lipoic Acid can literally slow down the process of aging. The study clarified that ALA restores levels of glutathione, a protective antioxidant and detoxification compound, to that of a young animal. A lower level of glutathione makes cells far more susceptible to free radicals and environmental toxins, and while scientists don't believe that ALA directly improves cellular function, they believe instead it simply "kick starts" declining function in cells. In a nutshell, Alpha Lipoic Acid is considered a "low-level stressor" that activates the body's basic cellular defenses that naturally decline with age.

Those who decide to take an Alpha Lipoic Acid supplement, or are already taking ALA, should be aware that it is a highly insoluble compound and hence poorly absorbed by the body in the powder form. More recently however, there are forms of ALA on the market that are already "solubilized," and therefore more efficiently and consistently absorbed, leading to higher ALA plasma levels. These findings are confirmed by studies conducted by KemTek Pharmaceuticals in rabbits and humans which showed that ALA plasma levels were two to three times higher with solubilized formulations versus several commercially available powder formulations. (ethicalalternativeproducts.com)

ALA is perhaps the magic bullet to not only a long lifespan, but more importantly, a great "healthspan," that is, the number of years of good health and freedom from degenerative disease one can expect. Alpha Lipoic Acid has myriad positive effects on the cellular level and it just may be the key to feeling great for years to come.

ALA, EPA, and DHA Omega3s - Which Ones Are Best For Your Health?

Between ALA, EPA, and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, do you know which ones are best for your health? This article discusses the differences between these fatty acids and which ones you want to consume the most of.

aladdin

ALA, EPA, and DHA are all beneficial to your health, but they all do not provide the same benefits.

Ala

The most complex of the three is DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid. It consists of 22 carbon chain bonds and 6 double bonds. Because it's the most complex, this omega-3 is also the most versatile.

EPA omega-3, or eicosapentaenoic acid, has 20 carbon chain bonds and 5 double bonds. Although not as complex as DHA, it still is rather versatile.

ALA omega-3, or alpha-linolenic acid, has 18 carbon chain bonds and three double bonds. Out of the three, it is certainly the least versatile.

Now, let me explain what I mean by versatile when talking about ALA, EPA, and DHA omega-3...

When your body needs more of a certain omega-3, other forms can be converted to it. This is done by adding or removing carbon bonds.

Since DHA omega-3 is so complex, all it has to do is drop some carbon bonds to convert into EPA or ALA if need be. EPA can drops a few bonds as well to make ALA too, but has to add a few to make DHA. But ALA has to add carbon bonds to make both EPA and DHA.

Therefore, you want to make sure that you consume more DHA than EPA and ALA. And if need be, your body can convert DHA into one of the other forms.

The best source of DHA and EPA omega-3 is deep, cold water fish like tuna, salmon, mackerel, hoki, and sardines. ALA is only found in plant-based sources like fruits and veggies, oils, nuts, etc.

Shockingly, the average person only consumes about one-fifth of the amount of DHA and EPA they should on a daily basis. In fact, studies are showing that this may be a big reason why so many people are developing behavioral problems like anxiety, depression, ADD, ADHD, and even Alzheimer's disease.

The reason why so many people don't consume enough DHA and EPA is probably because you'd have to eat fish multiple times a day to consume the recommended amount.

But thankfully, there's a simple solution to this problem: Taking a quality DHA and EPA fish oil supplement!

How Important is ALA Omega 3 for Health?

ALA omega 3 is a long-chain fatty acid required for many important functions of the body. Flax seed oil is a natural and rich source of ALA omega 3 fatty acid. Fish oil, on the other hand, contains the other two fatty acids which are short-chain counterparts of ALA and are know as DHA and EPA.

alarm system

All these fats are considered as good fats and are not found in adequate amounts in our body since the body is unable to manufacture its own fatty acids. In order to address this deficiency, doctors advise people with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, arthritis and mental illnesses to intake omega 3 fats in large amounts through diet and nutritional supplements.

Ala

DHA has been found to be important for the development of the baby's brain. In addition to this, it is also required for the protection of cell membranes. DHA along with other fatty acids helps in the prevention of many deadly diseases including cancer and Alzheimer's disease. These fats are good for pregnant women as they ensure healthy pregnancies and prevent birth defects and miscarriages.

Omega 3 fish oil supplements are becoming increasingly popular among people across the world because they are easy to consume and cause no side effects at all. In addition to this, these fish oil capsules are known to provide long-term health benefits. They contain ALA omega 3 in just the right amount as required by our body. Normally 1 or 2 capsules are enough for an otherwise healthy person to fulfill daily requirements of this fat.

Omega 3 fats reduce inflammation throughout the body and therefore they are recommended to people who suffer from inflammatory conditions like arthritis and cystitis. Oily and fatty fish like herring, salmon, sardines, hoki, mackerel, trout and tuna are mostly used in the making of fish oil supplements because they are high in omega 3 fats.

You need to know that in addition to essential fatty acids, pure fish oil also contains some impurities and contaminants that are harmful for long-term health. These impurities are bacteria, heavy metals like mercury, lead and arsenic, and toxins. It is therefore important to buy pharmaceutical grade fish oil which is first refined and purified and then packaged into capsules.

This high grade fish oil is free from impurities and is approved by health specialists after testing it thoroughly in the laboratory. It does not cause any side effects and is effective for people of all ages.

Take Flax Seed for Optimum Heart Health

The essential fatty acids in flax seed help to lower cholesterol and triglycerides (amount of fat in your blood), keep blood pressure stable and prevent clotting and plaque building up. Given that the heart attack rates in America have increased steadily at approximately three percent over the last century, more Americans could certainly use a daily dose of flax seed in their diets.

aladdin

Studies have been conducted on people suffering from high cholesterol that have proven the ALA in walnuts lowers cholesterol as well as triglycerides. Flax seed also contains high levels of ALA, which indicates that it would also have these same effects.

Ala

Reportedly those who have diets with a high ALA content are much less likely to have a heart attack. Two fatty acids that ALA produces, EPA and DHA, help with avoiding clots and prevent plaque build ups occurring, which both contribute to heart attacks.

Often those who have had one heart attack are at a higher risk of experiencing another possibly fatal one. Adding an omega 3 fatty acid supplement containing ALA, DHA or EPA can reduce this risk considerably, possibly preventing serious strokes or even death. This Means flaxseed is a perfect supplement for anyone with a history of heart attacks in the family or having had one before themselves.

A natural way to lower your blood pressure is by taking omega 3 fatty acids. Many people choose to take flax seed oil instead of fish oil because there isn't the risk of it having high levels of damaging mercury.

If heart disease runs in you family, you have had a heart attack previously, have high blood pressure, high cholesterol or blood clots, start supplementing your diet with flax seed. There is a powder form you can put onto your cereal or in smoothies, milkshakes or salads. You can use the oil in all the above also, or if you are extremely fussy and sensitive to taste, the capsule form would be more suited to you.

Heart health is definitely one of the most important aspects of your physical being. So don't wait until it's too late and you have a heart attack, or worse, a fatality. There are so many benefits overall to taking flax seed as an essential fatty acid dietary supplement, you will notice you start feeling better in not much time at all. Your skin will glow, and you moods will elevate, contributing to less overall stress and less pressure on your heart.

Health Benefits From Walnuts! Is It Really Just The Conversion Of ALA Into EPA Fatty Acids?

Walnuts have been in the news lately. All of a sudden this "sleeper" of a nut has taken on grand importance from not just a health standpoint, but there is a rumbling that it might even have some ability to enhance amorous intentions of the physical kind. Now that would be a corker! But along with everything else the Romans did, they considered walnuts to be a sexual medicine, and scattered them over couples getting married like we do rice! Go figure.

alarm system

From a health point of view, walnuts contain one of the better sources of Omega-3 ALA, which is a fatty acid. When you consume walnuts, about 1 1/2 to 2 ounces daily, it can result in some positive effects to your health. Now what's interesting is why.

Ala

We're talking about the difference between EPA and ALA fatty acids. ALA fatty acids have no effect on the body unless they are converted. When they are converted they change to an EPA fatty acid which the body can then use, but not all of the acid is converted, leaving the rest to be flushed out of the body in the blood. Add the antioxidants and phytosterols which are also fatty acids, and now you have help preventing tumor development in breast cancer and other forms of cancers from tumors. Not bad for a nut!

A study in Israel found that the fatty acid found in walnuts made a significant reduction in a gene related to Alzheimer's. And of course the list goes on, much the same as it does for fish oil. And why not? It's still about what happens once the ALA is converted to the same fatty acid found in Omega-3 from fish.

Again, the Omega-3 from walnuts, as well as any plant or vegetable source is not what gets the job done in your body. It is the ability of your incredibly well engineered body to convert the this to the right stuff, and THAT is what gets the job done. Pretty amazing how the body works, in ways we cannot see.

So yes, walnuts can definitely contribute to your health, and you should eat a good handful every day...along with a good dose of fish oil supplements!

In summary, the supply of Omega rich fatty acids from fish is still the best source of the fatty acids necessary for optimum health. New Zealand may be the best resource for those supplements, due to some of the most pristine waters in the world where pure algae containing the food for fish, free of toxins and pollutants, provide the source of oil for this product.

It's you choice, and your health.

Discover the Health Benefits of DHA

The health benefits of DHA are basically the ones ascribed to omega 3 fatty acids. This is because DHA is an omega 3 fat, and not only that, it's the most important one of all.

aladdin dvd

The other two types of omega 3's are EPA and ALA. ALA is the least necessary because the body needs to change it into DHA and EPA before it can be used for a range of health needs. This conversion is difficult and not efficient. The result is people who rely on ALA as their only source of omega 3's (like vegans, or strict vegetarians), have a much more difficult time of getting the DHA and EPA omegas their bodies need.

Ala

ALA is the source of omega 3's, to be perfectly clear, that you get in plant/nut/and vegetable sources.

On the other end of the spectrum, if you take in DHA and EPA directly, you don't need to take in ALA and hope enough converts. This is not to say you don't need to eat vegetables and nuts for good health. Those foods have a lot of other benefits that you do need for good health.

The health benefits of DHA include: boosting the proper functioning of the brain. The most common brain disorders have now been linked to a low level of DHA. Who here hasn't heard of disorders like ADHD, depression, anxiety, mood swings, bipolarity, Alzheimers, or simply forgetfulness, lack of focus and loss of memory? All of these disorders originate in the brain....and are associated with low levels of DHA.

Conversely, almost all of these brain conditions have been shown to improve with higher intake of DHA. Indeed, DHA is more vital than EPA because the human brain's weight is made up of much more significant portions of DHA fat.

DHA is very important for heart disease. DHA and EPA omega 3's can help prevent platelets from sticking together. This helps prevent heart attack by allowing the blood to flow more easily and because its potent anti-inflammatory properties help plaque-build up. By the same mechanism, these omega-3's are also beneficial in preventing strokes.

Other health benefits of DHA include helping improve the health of hair and skin, conditions like crohn's disease, rheumatoid arthritis, menstrual cramps, and even fighting certain cancers, like that of the breast and colon.

As you can see, DHA is an amazing omega 3 fatty acid.

Flax Oil vs Fish Oil - Heart Health Research

When flax oil vs fish oil for heart health protection, the research shows that fish oil wins over flax oil. This is particularly important if you want to protect yourself and those you care about from heart disease.

alaska

So, what is the specific research in relation to flax oil vs fish oil?

Ala

In one recent study of 14 controlled clinical trials, researchers at Emory University found that the fish oil omega 3 studies showed a significant reduction in deaths from coronary heart disease and total mortality - from any cause.

These fish oil studies were based on dietary fish consumption and fish oil supplements as the source of omega 3 fish oil.

On the other hand, studies based on flax oil and alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an omega 3 oil from plants that doesn't contain the DHA and EPA factors found in cold water fatty fish, were found to be less reliable and did not show the same health benefits.

The plant based ALA trials used flax oil supplements and ALA enriched diets, including walnut, soybean and flax seed oil.

The lead Emory University researchers, C. R. Harper and T. A. Jacobson, reviewed the omega 3 clinical trial studies by dividing them into categories. There were plant based omega 3 studies using only ALA (mainly flax oil) and studies on dietary consumption of omega 3 fish oil with DHA (docsahexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid).

Of the 14 studies, eight were conducted on flax oil and other ALA sources and six were based on fish oil. The fish oil research included one very large study of over 10,000 participants published in the American Journal of Cardiology. [ Vol. 96, December 2005, pp. 1521-29]

Dr. Harper and Dr. Jacobson concluded that the data on ALA and flax oil was very limited and showed NO significant heart health benefits. Whereas fish oil with DHA and EPA demonstrated a significant reduction in coronary heart disease fatality, sudden death and total mortality.

Several of the studies found that omega 3 fish oil with DHA and EPA fatty acids reduced heart attack risk by benefiting the blood vessel wall cells, lowering the risk of thrombosis and blood clotting and by reducing inflammation.

Other research, published in Circulation, the official journal of the American Heart Association, gives a thorough rundown on how omega 3 fatty acids from fish improves heart health and why fish oil works so well for the cardiovascular system in numerous ways.

This study shows that fish oil fatty acids help by lowering cholesterol, preventing irregular heartbeat, reducing blood clots, decreasing blood pressure, lowering triglycerides, balancing HDL and LDL, relaxing arterial walls and preventing the formation of new plaque, inflammation, vasoconstriction, platelet aggregation and more. [Vol. 106:2747]

Based on these successful studies, the American Heart Association suggests that everyone increase their consumption of DHA and EPA rich fish and fish oil supplements to a daily dose of at least 1 gram. For optimum health, those with coronary heart disease might consider taking more.

When it comes to flax oil vs fish oil for heart health, the fish wins, fins down!
