Men are large sized kids; they need their own space just as much as your teenager does. Actually if your man is like many, you end up with a permanent divot in your living room sofa from when he comes home from work and doesn't move until he transfers to the bed. If you have a room you can devote to him, which is normally called a "man cave", you can have your living room back. If you are tired of being resigned to the kitchen table with your friends so you can talk without yelling over the live football telecast or the video games, it may well be to your advantage to create a man cave in your home just for him.
A man cave consists of some necessary essentials, but you can fancy it up some if you think your man may like a few extras. The basic man cave consists of a very comfortable sofa or a couple of recliners, a coffee table, and a good sized flat screen television with a shelf of some sort to hold games and movies. These are the absolute necessities that every man needs. Arrange the sofa on one side with the television on the opposite, and the table should be easily accessible from your seating selection.

Other items you may want to get to make the man cave more complete are a card table for poker style games with chairs, an apartment sized refrigerator for their favorite snacks and beverages, and sun blocking curtains or blinds. When men revert to their cave for television they don't normally want much light. Others who play card games may want a good light directly over their card playing table. One great resolution for men's lighting is track lighting fixtures that can be aimed at a table or up at the ceiling for a softer light.
You can get rather creative, depending on what your man likes. Keep in mind what he likes as you shop for accessories. If he is an armchair sportsman you can pick up anything from posters to autographed portraits of their favorite sports players. If he prefers Chess, you may want to order peel and stick vinyl Chess pieces to adorn his walls. If he is a video game fanatic, organize his video game CDs in a protective case and decorate the walls with the store bought covers from the games. You can arrange them on a wall, or create a border nearest the top of the wall that travels all the way around the room.
Other ideas to truly make his man cave special may be to add all of his baseball style caps to the wall by gluing clothes pins to a yard stick, add paint, hang it on the wall and attach a cap to each clothes pin. If he enjoys wood working, add a saw blade clock to one wall. A cabinet to hold his favorite games, decks of cards, poker chips, or what ever he likes is always a good choice. You can always make him a game time bucket to sit on the floor by his favorite seat to include the controllers from the television and game systems, a few Jerky treats or what ever he prefers, and a bright red colored sponge. The sponge represents a brick that allows him to throw the "bad call brick" at the television during sports events without causing damage to the set.
The man cave can be very basic or fancy, depending on your man's preferences. As long as you keep his interests in mind as you put the room together, you simply can't go wrong!
