Couples Therapy For Grown Ups - Teach More Than Compromise, Teach Intimacy in Conflict

If only couples therapy worked. The problem is that for the most part couples therapy isn't effective. As is well documented, less than one in four couples that seek couples therapy experience long-term improvement in their marriage (e.g. Atkinson, 2002). This is totally unacceptable. But it speaks volumes. Why are the statistics on long term effectiveness so poor? There are earnest, hard working, well meaning and talented therapists working with couples. So what's the problem? Our experience in this field over the last 20 years tells us that couples therapy is so often ineffective because many couples therapists have not yet traveled far enough on their own path of developing true long-term intimacy which limits their ability to guide couples along this psychologically demanding journey.

esata to sata

In this article we will present a strong conceptual model of the couple relationship, one that IS simple, yet powerful in helping couples achieve long-term change. The foundation of this model lies in the work of Bader and Pearson (1988, 2000). It is a model that requires a strong capacity for intimacy from the couples therapist. We will assert that this capacity, that the couples therapist be a "grown up", is a prerequisite of any truly effective couples therapy. It is our hope that this article will help spur the reader's development as a more effective couples therapist. Because couples therapy deals with the most intimate of human relationships, the ability to truly help couples achieve long-term change demands a high level of intimacy issue resolution from couples therapists themselves. We cannot help couples go farther on the path of intimacy than we ourselves have gone. Unfortunately, this crucial issue of the therapist's own growth is pretty much ignored in couples therapy training and literature. Strangely, considering our profession, it seems odd not to incorporate the subject.

Esa

When we speak of intimacy we are not talking here about the ability to feel close to another or the ability to care for clients or to self-disclose. These are important, of course, but many therapists do these things and create strong bonds with their clients. Instead, we're talking about therapists having worked through their own issues in dealing with the negative aspect of intimacy, what we call the "dark side" of passion.

A common misconception in Western culture is that passion is all about love and sex, the wonderful, warm, hot, loving, close aspect of an intimate relationship. We have forgotten that just as essential to passion is its dark side, passion as agony. In fact, the English word "passion" is derived from the Latin word "passio", meaning suffering.

The dark side of passion for any couple is their experience dealing with their negative "hot" feelings, with their differences and conflicts. This is where many couples therapists fail their clients because the therapist has not developed his or her own ability to deal with the dark side of passion well in his or her own personal life. The maturation of this personal capability in the therapist is fundamental to effective couples therapy.

Because the couple's failure to deal effectively with the dark side of their passion has contributed to their difficulties, it is crucial to the process of creating positive long-term change in couples that each therapist have experience with the dark side of passion themselves. We teach our clients that conflicts in any intimate relationship are inevitable, but not necessarily destructive or indicative of relationship failure. In fact, we tell them that differences can be the fodder for the growth and evolution of a relationship, whether we welcome them or not. But in order to help them achieve such growth we must already have journeyed successfully along this road to intimacy. Otherwise we are the blind leading the blind.

But even if we are "sighted" we therapists need a simple yet powerful conceptual model to structure and direct our work with couples. This model that enables couples therapist to create long-term and effective change for couples is the Differentiation Model of couples therapy.

The Differentiation Model was developed most notably by Ellyn Bader and Pete Pearson (1988). As the title suggests, differentiation is the central concept of the model. So what IS differentiation? It is the ability of the individual to express and hold onto one's sense of self, one's values, feelings, ideas and desires while facing the tension that is created when an intimate or significant other disagrees. In the face of this tension, the differentiated individual maintains his or her perspective and attendant feelings while simultaneously respecting, though not necessarily agreeing with the views of the other. In contrast, when we are not yet differentiated we avoid the tension of the differences by trying to get the other person to agree with us or by (resentfully) complying with their position.

Using differentiation as the keystone to an individual's development and the couple's growth, the Differentiation Model is elegant in its simplicity. The model has three main elements. One is that it is a developmental model of long-term love relationships. Two is that this development revolves around the process of growth in the couple from symbiotic to differentiated functioning. And three, one of our contributions to the Differentiation Model, is the concept of the Three Intimacies. We assert that there are three types of intimacy that govern any couple's progress, or lack thereof, in evolving and navigating from symbiotic to differentiated functioning.

The Differentiation Model assumes a developmental approach to understanding relationships. Just as individuals proceed through an unfolding, developmental process (e.g. Erikson, Piaget) so do couples. As we conceptualize it, this process consists of four developmental stages.

Stage 1 is what we call Sweet Symbiosis, the honeymoon phase at the beginning of a love relationship. It is filled with love and passion and marked by the two partners merging into one identity. This is symbiotic functioning at its intoxicating best. This symbiotic magic is what many couples try in vain to recapture for many years hence.

It is also the stage. This magical time, when "love is blind", is almost always essential for long-term love success because it creates the deep, strong bond that will be necessary for the couple is to weather the inevitable arrival of their differences which create tension between them.

The appearance of their individuality and differences is the hallmark of Stage 2, Soured Symbiosis when the honeymoon is over as each partner begins to realize that there are things about the other that he or she does not like, when the first disillusionment occurs. This is the stage that the vast majority of couples who come for therapy find themselves mired in. It is marked by the couple's struggle to develop the ability to be highly intimate once the blinders of Sweet Symbiosis have vanished. This stage can last for years as many marriages never get beyond Soured Symbiosis. Consequently, the relationship erodes and instead of fighting for the relationship, one or both partners either run away through infidelity and/or divorce or they settle for a stagnated relationship that has failed its promise.

But if each partner owns his or part in the relationship's problems and sincerely works on those issues and weaknesses, the couple can get to Stage 3, Differentiation. This is the stage when each partner struggles within the self and with the partner to learn how to deal with the dark side of passion. The key is being able to stay differentiated in conflict, to be able to hold onto the realization that the partner's negative feelings, his or her hurt, disappointment and anger is about the partner, not about me. As Pete Pearson likes to say, this is all about being able to be "curious, not furious". Also vital is the ability to self define, to hold onto one's self in the face of the tension of conflict and to be able to stand up for one's self constructively and effectively.

If the couple continues this work, learns this new, more mature intimacy through differentiation, they then enter Stage 4, Synergy. It is then that the couple has learned how to handle the dark side of passion well and they have realized that as they work through the tension, the wonderful, loving aspect of passion returns and is enriched. Through this process the relationship is strengthened and the couple has created a loving bond and a life together for the long-term that is greater than either of them. They both merge and differentiate to create a mature long-term love relationship.

It is important to note here that the movement of couples through these stages is bi-directional. For example, during times of high stress, couples that have reached Stage 3 and 4 functioning often regress to earlier, less mature functioning levels. For example, this can be seen when there is a serious illness in the family. One or both spouses often become more symbiotic. But if the couple has grown into differentiated functioning previously, the partners would be expected to be able to work through the struggle and successfully reestablish differentiation.

With the Differentiation Model in hand, the well-equipped couples therapist then needs a set of clear tools to teach and create differentiation in both the individual and the couple. In our work helping couples move from Soured Symbiosis into Differentiation and Synergy we focus on what we term the Three Intimacies: Self Intimacy, Conflict Intimacy and Affection Intimacy. We use these concepts to help ourselves and our clients understand what cements and feeds a healthy long-term relationship. Embedded within these concepts are the tools that we use and teach our clients in order to strengthen their three Intimacies.

In short, Self Intimacy (SI) refers to the individual's moment-to-moment awareness of his or her feelings, desires and thoughts. And the tool we use and teach our client to develop his/her SI is the Emotional Self Awareness exercise (Solomon & Teagno). Conflict Intimacy is the ability of couples to get through conflict, tension and differences well and the tool used is the Initiator-Inquirer exercise (the I-to-I; Bader & Pearson). And the third Intimacy is Affection Intimacy which we define in four ways: verbal, actions, non-sexual physical and sexual. With an understanding of the three Intimacies and how to assess how competent each partner is with each, the therapist can introduce and use the ESA and I-to-I exercises to help the couple develop their Self Intimacy and Conflict Intimacy within and without the sessions.

Exploring a Tennessee Cave

In 1984, while visiting relatives in Tennessee, they told me of their water supply. A pump house at the base of a large hill where they pumped water from a cave lake located below. A previous owner had used cinder blocks to block the entrance to a cave in the side of the hill and built a small dam to back up the stream flowing from the cave. As caving was my hobby, I became very interested and at once wanted to investigate this underground lake. This was to good to pass up, I persuaded one of my relatives to go with me and wait at the entrance while I check out the cave.

With no caving gear and just a flashlight I thought that I would just see if it amounted to anything. Raising the plywood door at the bottom of the pump house, I entered the cave by wading in 10 inches of water for a few feet and looked for a way to continue. The ceiling came down to the water, but to the left along the back side of the cinder block wall was a 20 foot long crawl that led to a 4 foot high room at the edge of the water. After wading through about 100 feet of low water filled passage, I was able to stand up in a larger room with the stream flowing along one side. This room had two columns in the middle and several small holes leading off in different directions. I followed the stream for about 40 feet and then reentered the stream which continued in a 6 foot high by 5 foot wide passage. The water was now deeper, up to my waist and was about 55 degrees. I continued to navigate over the rocky bottom around three turns by staying to the sides where the mud and water was not so deep. Alone and with limited light, I called it quits for the day. It would be two years before I could return to push this tantalizing lead.

Cave

First Trip, October 25, 1986

About once a month, a small group friends and I would go caving in well known caves in northeast Alabama, northwest Georgia and east Tennessee, referred to by the caving society as TAG country. This area is well known for deep pits and long caves. On each trip I would tell them about the cave on my cousins property and we would discuss checking it out. We at last set a date and drove up from Marietta, Georgia on a Saturday. There had been a heavy storm the night before and my cousin said that he had seen the plywood door pushed up completely open by the water rushing out of the cave after a hard rain.

Before getting dressed in our caving gear, we walked down to the entrance to check the water level, it was running normal, however it is not unusual for caves to flood hours after a heavy rain. The temptation was to great, so we suited up for caving. Each member of the group carries 3 sources of light, with one attached to a hard hat with chin strap. Gloves are required if you plan to take any notes or survey. In addition to the survey gear consisting of a Sonic Tape measure, electronic Smart level with a Laser pointer attached and a Data Scope compass, each member carried water and a snack. We adopted the map as you go method exploration. This requires great restraint on the part of each member not to scoop passage. Scooping passage is when a few members would stop the survey and start exploring on their own. This usually results in explored passages not being completely mapped.

Our first mapping party consisted of Buddy Davis, Roger Garratt, John Wallace and myself. We entered the cave and decided to see if it amounted to much before starting to survey, then we would survey our way out. We followed the stream around several turns for about 300 feet coming out of the water near a T-junction. We followed the main stream through walking passage until it became blocked by breakdown with the stream flowing from under the rocks.

At this point, there were no footprints or other signs that anyone had been this far into the cave. We started the survey at the breakdown, working back down stream to the junction. We then took the survey up the side passage exploring as we mapped. We climbed up about 3 feet with a smaller stream flowing below, we mapped on to the bottom of a large pit and then about 50 feet more before the passage became too tight.

Returning to the pit, Buddy and I climbed up and continued the survey while John and Roger retreated back along the passage to check a lead going up at a formation on the left. After mapping a formation room at one level, we climbed to the top of the pit and found large walking passage going in both directions. We explored in one direction for several hundred feet, then returned to the top of the pit, where we were surprised to hear John and Roger coming up the passage from the other direction. They had found a connecting passage around the pit.

We mapped down the large passage going southeast then turned back to the left to a large breakdown room almost directly over the point where the stream started and where we had first started our survey. Going up over very loose breakdown, we entered another large passage blocked at the end by a small pit with a stream flowing across the bottom. We decided to quit for the day and went back to map the connection John and Roger had found.

This connection passed two of the largest formations in the cave, which I named Clark Columns, in honor of my first cousins family name and owner of the property. On a later trip we discovered a large formation room at a higher level. We exited the cave after six hours, having mapped 2,380 feet, all mostly walking passage with many leads to be checked.

Crystal Lake Cave in Iowa - A Great Vacation and Travel Destination

Iowa has some beautiful places that are wonderful vacation destinations. One of the must see places is Crystal Lake Cave. There is an interesting story behind this location. Back in 1868 lead miners were looking for a lead vein and they drilled 40 feet into the ground. And although they were not successful in finding the lead they had hoped for they did find something else even more amazing. What they found was Crystal Lake Cave. Although the cave was discovered for many years it was not open to
the public until 1932. Bernard Markus, one of the original miners, played a role in getting the cave open to the public and it finally became so after his death.

caveman movie

While the miners were digging they found quite a few different types of gems and minerals that are on display in the gift shop. There is no other show cavern like Crystal Lake Cave and this is the longest a cave has been "alive" in Iowa. The cave is underground and continues to be one of the most amazing places to visit in Iowa. The tour of the cave takes about half an hour to 45 minutes and it is an adventure like none other you have ever taken. A tour guide will lead you so that you get the most out of the adventure. Keep in mind that no matter what the temperature is outside it will be quite cool in Crystal Lake Cave and the year round temperature is usually around 52 degrees Fahrenheit.

Cave

The cave is open from 9 am to 5 pm on weekends in May and daily in June, July and August from 9 am until 6 pm. In September the cave is open from 11 am until 5 pm on weekdays and 9 am until 5 pm on weekends. The cave is open through mid October from 11 am until 5 pm on weekdays and 9 am until 5 pm on weekends. The rest of the year the cave is closed for winter. Prices for adults are and for kids four to 11. Kids under four are free and senior citizens receive a 10% discount. Group pricing is available. The cave is located three miles south of Dubuque, Iowa and 20 minutes from Galena, Illinois.

Cocklebiddy Cave Expedition

Diving out in the Nullarbor Plain is what Australian cave diving is all about. To get to the dive site you literally head out into the desert and it is thousands of kilometers to the closest city. The trip becomes an expedition based purely on the remoteness of the site. There are no dive shops, in fact, there is not much of anything out there except for strong winds, red dust and piercing sunshine.

cave story

Hence generators, compressors, spare parts, food, water and beer... everything has to come with you. If you happen to forget an o-ring, well, you're rather out of luck. A host of local characters add flavor to the trip; from lizards and dingoes, to snakes and spiders and off course, the much loved flies.

Cave

The key feature of any trip out to Cocklebiddy is the hard work associated with actually getting in the water. There is a lot of physical labor involved as each piece of equipment has to be ferried down to the water's edge and that is no mean feat as the rock pile leading down to the Lake is a several hundred meter scramble. If you are not fit before you get there, well, you certainly will be by the time you finish the trip. But it is all worth it, as Cocklebiddy is an incredible cave... big, white and beautiful... and the size of it is just phenomenal. It clocks in as Australia's longest cave at 6.5km of linear distance, but it is size of the actual passage one swims through that is breathtaking.

The cave boasts three sumps, which means negotiating two rock piles along the way in order to keep diving and reach the end. The rock piles require clambering over boulders and rocks and dragging all the gear, including scooters, across to the other side. The first rock pile is about a 100m long, so it is a big of a clamber up and over. The next chamber is the infamous Toad Hall. It is 300m across and is more than just a scramble I can assure you. Here you negotiate huge boulder piles and steep slopes and really have to give it your all. The chamber is hot and humid and has slightly high CO2 levels, just to make things more interesting.

Toad Hall is home to a slate where cave diving visitors have signed their name since its discovery in 1982. To date there are only about 50 names on the slate, so this place is definitely not a thoroughfare. When we arrived only one woman had ever dived to Toad Hall - Tania Yarra. So Sandy Varin and I were the first chicks to dive in sump three.

I loved sump three, it was much smaller and scraggly looking and was probably my favorite sump. After making 5 trips across Toad Hall in order to carry all my dive gear across, submerging into the cool water was most welcome. I headed towards the end of the line Craig Challen laid in 2008 but unfortunately had to turn on gas before the very end. As it turned out I was a mere 20m off the very end of the cave and thus managed to set a record for the longest cave dive in Australia for a female. Still, as far as I'm concerned you're either the first or you're one of many. Craig beat me to it so there's not much to write home about. Nonetheless, it was a wickedly cool dive and I enjoyed myself immensely.

The boys (Rick Stanton, Craig Challen, Harry Harris) tried to extend the cave a little bit further, but Cockle was having none of that and bits of their equipment were also less then cooperative. It seems unfair to blame the equipment for being less then obliging, given the difficult conditions, brackish water and general rough treatment. It can be frustrating however and I must have uttered a few choice words after becoming a victim to a scooter failure which saw me swim 2.5km back out of Toad Hall - fun times. Just as well I was coming off a trip to FL where it wasn't unusual for me to swim 3km on a dive just for kicks.

The whole trip was a great experience. There was a host of cool and classic folks (Craig Challen, Richard Harris, Ken Smith, Geoff Paynter, Leigh Bishop, John Dalla-Zuanna, Rick Stanton, Doug Friday, Mark Brown, Mick Green, David and Sandy Varin and Jamie Brisbin) and it was an absolute treat to be a part of the expedition. Can't wait to head back - gotta recovery the silly light I lost in sump three!

How To Design A Man Cave The Right Way

Men need a place to unwind. The thing is, it's actually a lot harder for men to unwind then women. The reason for this is simple: it's hard for a man to unwind when there are so many things going on around him. Sure, you can go to the living room and watch some sports, but unless you have the area to yourself it's hard to really sit back and enjoy, especially when a child or a significant other wants to talk and "hang around". That's why the idea of a man cave has become so popular in recent years.

cavenders seasoning

A man cave is a room that is all about the man: sports, beer, games, etc. If you like it then the man cave is the place to do it. When it comes to how to design a man cave, it's really a person thing.

Cave

First things first: find a place for a man cave. Traditionally a man room is in an out of the way location that a man can get away. This traditionally includes places such as basements, enclosed garage areas, and small, out of the way rooms. Since you are typically building a man room from scratch, it doesn't technically have to be anything that special. So when your asking how to design a man cave you are probably wondering what needs to be in there? Traditionally you need at least one big screen television (depending on how many sporting events you want at once), a fridge for beer and food, a couple of couches, and some nice "manly" decorations.

When it comes down to it, a man space is a social area that is meant for more than one man. While it might be a place to relax by yourself, it's also a place to invite your friends over for an evening. With this in mind, you may want to put in a bar complete with stools, some social games like darts and Foosball, and maybe even a card table if you are looking to do a little bit of card play. If you are wondering how to design a man cave in a small room, stuff like a bar and a Foosball table are not absolutely needed.

When it comes down to it, a man cave is a place to get away from. You don't have to be into sports or into drinking to have a man cave. Heck, it can be a place where you build model ships or do your stocks. The trick to how to design a man cave is to make it comfortable for you or the special man in your life.
